Who takes the California license test

Different drivers arrive at the same exam from different places.

New to California

Permit holders ready for the next step

If you have finished your supervised hours and permit time, this test sharpens the rules the driving test builds on.

Drivers returning after a break

Rules and signs change. A few quizzes will show which of your habits need updating before you drive again.

Anyone who wants a refresher

Even experienced drivers forget details such as insurance limits, the bike-lane rule or when to dim headlights.

What the California license knowledge test covers

The knowledge test for a driver’s license in California is administered by California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and draws on the official driver handbook. Licensed drivers are expected to handle traffic, freeways, bad weather and the legal duties that come with the keys.

2

Quiz 2: Sharing the road

Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, trucks, buses and emergency vehicles.

3

Quiz 3: Freeways, night and bad weather

Freeway entry and exit, night driving, fog, rain, skids and mountain roads.

Full mock exam

50 mixed questions, including impaired driving and distractions.

How to get a California driver's license

The steps differ if you already hold a permit or license from another state.

If you hold a permit

  • Finish your permit time and practice hours. Under 18, that means six months, 50 hours and six hours of professional training.
  • Schedule a driving test appointment and bring proof of insurance.
  • You have three attempts on one application. Failing three means reapplying.
  • After you pass, you receive a temporary license valid for 60 days.

If you have an out-of-state license

  • Complete the DL/ID application and visit a DMV office.
  • Provide your Social Security number, proof of identity and proof of residency.
  • Pay the fee, pass the vision exam and give your thumbprint and photo.
  • Pass the knowledge test. A foreign license holder also takes a driving test.

Read the full steps on the DMV’s driver’s license page. Fees change, so confirm the amount on the licensing fees page before your visit.

Permit test or license test?

The knowledge test content is shared, but the way people prepare is not. On the permit page we focus on learner rules, supervised hours and the limits placed on new drivers. On this page we focus on the duties of a licensed driver. If you are new to driving, take the permit practice test California first. If you already drive, start here.

Study plan for a week

  • Day 1: Quiz 1, then read the handbook’s licensing chapter.
  • Day 2: Quiz 2 and review missed sharing-the-road rules.
  • Day 3: Quiz 3 with a focus on weather and emergencies.
  • Day 4: Rest, or retake your lowest quiz.
  • Day 5: Full mock exam with the timer on.
  • Day 6: Review every miss.
  • Day 7: Book your DMV visit.

Where license applicants slip

These are the questions that catch experienced drivers.

1

Assuming old habits are legal

Holding a phone, rolling stops and unsafe passing are common. The test asks what the law says, not what people do.

2

Guessing on numbers

Distances, days and limits appear often. Use the number tiles above as a checklist.

3

Skipping insurance and reporting rules

These are easy to overlook but show up as direct questions on the knowledge test.

California drivers license test FAQ

How is the license test different from the permit test?

Both draw on the California Driver's Handbook. The permit test leans on learner rules, while these quizzes focus on the duties of a licensed driver: insurance, reporting, sharing the road, freeways and bad weather.

I just moved to California. How soon must I get a license?

New residents are expected to apply for a California license within 10 days of establishing residency. You will complete the application, vision exam and knowledge test at a DMV office.

Can I use my out-of-state license?

You can keep driving on it briefly, but as a resident you must apply for a California license. The DMV does not waive the knowledge test for a license from another state.

How many times can I take the knowledge test?

You have three attempts on one application. If you fail the same test three times, the application is no longer valid and you must reapply.

What happens after I pass the driving test?

The DMV issues a temporary license valid for 60 days while the card is mailed to you, typically within a few weeks.

What are California's minimum liability insurance limits?

The state minimums are $30,000 for injury or death to one person, $60,000 for more than one person, and $15,000 for property damage. Higher limits are available.

When must I report a collision to the DMV?

Within 10 days if anyone was injured or killed, or if property damage exceeds $1,000. This is separate from any police report.

Are these quiz questions the same as the DMV test?

No. They cover the same topics in the same style, but the wording is our own. Use the handbook to confirm any answer.
